Our Review of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance & Foundation
For those shopping for pet insurance who value convenience in filing claims for their dog or cat, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is a good choice since claims can be filed by simply uploading a photo of your paid veterinary bill.
As a top-rated pet insurer by Consumers Advocate and Canine Journal, Health Paws is also heavily invested in pet well-being, having donated over $836,000 in grants to more than 250 non-profit organizations dedicated to homeless animal safety and health as of July 2019.
Breadth of Coverage
Healthy Paws offers nationwide coverage for cats and dogs only – no other pet types or exotics are covered. However, a wide range of cat and dog breed types is accepted, with rates a bit higher for certain breeds.
The age limit of any pet for coverage is 14 years, so older pets are not eligible for coverage, and rates for older pets within the limit are predictably higher than younger pets.
Most normal catastrophic situations are covered for qualifying dogs and cats, including illnesses, accidents, hereditary conditions, prescription medications, cancer, e-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds, emergency care, alternative treatments, and more – as long as it’s not a pre-existing condition. Pre-existing conditions are defined as having first occurred of showing clinical symptoms prior to the day your coverage starts, including waiting periods.
Other plan exclusions include preventative or routine care (coverage is for catastrophic occurrences only), spay and neuter procedures, elective procedures including micro-chipping, and office visit/examination fees.
There are no specified coverage “programs”, and rates are determined based on your pet type, breed, age, and geographic location. All plans offer a choice of 90%, 80%, or 70% reimbursement percentages, and the annual deductible options are $100, $250, or $500 per year. There is no maximum payout limit per claim or per year; however, there is a lifetime limit.
There are no networks, and you can visit any US-licensed vet or emergency clinic.
If your pet is 6 years of age or older, a veterinary exam is required within the 30 days prior to enrollment, or within 15 days after enrollment. For pets younger than six years of age, a veterinary exam is required within 12 months prior to enrollment, or within 15 days after enrollment.

Policies start as low as $15 for cats and $20 for dogs, and – unlike most other insurance companies – there are no caps on claim payouts.
Premium payments can be made using direct debit to your bank account or charged to a Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover credit card. If you wish to cancel your policy, you must do so in writing at least 14 days prior to your next premium payment. You may increase your deductible and decrease your reimbursement level at any time in writing, but may only decrease those your deductible and increase your reimbursement level if you have not previously filed a claim for the pet.
The Healthy Paws website does not mention any group discounts available, and no discount is offered for multiple pets.
The Healthy Paws website provides clear descriptions of their policies and what you can expect when you insure your dog or cat with them. Receiving a quote is simple, requiring only your pet’s type, breed, age, and geographic location to obtain your monthly payment rate.
Rates and policy details are generally clear at the website, and shoppers can easily download a sample policy to investigate details of coverage further. The website and mobile app offer a Frequently Asked Questions section that clearly answers questions and concerns the typical shopper may have about Healthy Paws coverage policies.
